Questions & Answers
When did you join IMET?
I joined IMET in 2013. Prior to that, I worked in a materials engineering start-up based in Edinburgh. I started out as a mechanical engineer and went on to lead the commercial team.
What do you do here at IMET? What is your main responsibility?
I run the European side of the business, working closely with colleagues in the US. I’m responsible for making sure we deliver for our customers on a day-to-day basis, and, more generally, that we continue to grow the business to meet its potential.
What do you need to be good at to do your job well? What particular skills and knowledge do you have?
Number one is having a good team around you, people who you trust. My degree in engineering has helped, and allowed me to get up to speed quickly, even though I hadn’t worked in the metals industry before. My degree also helps me approach things logically and analytically.
What problems do you need to overcome as part of your work?
I deal with big picture problems such as the global economy, global exchange rates and commodity prices. And then there’s the day-to-day stuff, which is where it’s so crucial to have good partners. Thankfully, here at IMET, we have excellent partners.
How do you know when your work has gone well?
From an operational perspective, we have KPIs and quality processes that let us know how we're doing. But, more importantly, we know things have gone well whenever our customers are happy. Fortunately, they often let us know that they're pleased.
What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?
I like that no two days are the same and there's always a challenge to deal with. The industry is small but global; the travel is cool, and the people are awesome.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy mountain biking and motor sports.
