Nurturing talent through innovation and internships

As you step into the world of hi-tech metals and engineering, the importance of real-world experience becomes undeniable.

At IMET Alloys, we recognize that the next generation of engineers and innovators will drive our industry forward, which is why we are committed to developing new talent through our internship and graduate programs.

Over the past six months, two talented Edinburgh University interns, Uwais Ajmal and Faiz Zaid, have been part of our journey, contributing to pioneering research and development while gaining invaluable industry experience.

In some industries and businesses, an internship can mean many long hours spent shadowing full time staff members.  At IMET we ensure that our interns actively participate in cutting-edge projects that have a tangible impact.

Uwais and Faiz embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly, working closely with our engineering team and academic partners to push the boundaries of material science and sustainability.

Partnerships

One of the key projects undertaken during the internship involved research and development in partnership with the University of Edinburgh. This included forming hypotheses, conducting bench-scale tests, analyzing data, and presenting ideas for scaling up—all within an environment that encourages autonomy and responsibility.

This not only develops technical expertise but also helps with project management and the essential soft skills that are often overlooked in some quarters but are so important to future career development.

As an example of the work undertaken, one of our interns worked on evaluating several technologies to reclaim wastewater from an aqueous wash line, conducting bench-scale feasibility studies to support our sustainability initiatives.

The ability to reclaim wastewater is crucial in maintaining a closed-loop system—an approach that aligns with IMET Alloys’ commitment to environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.

Bridging the Gap

The findings from this project will help shape the company’s decision-making and influence the design of future reclamation systems, demonstrating the real-world impact of the work carried out during the internship.

Beyond the technical aspects, the experience of an intern at IMET is enriched by continuous learning. Our team of experts ensure that they are supported every step of the way, providing mentorship that enhances both their theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Working alongside experts in various fields helps interns bridge the gap between academic learning and industry application, deepening understanding of complex engineering systems.

They also gain the opportunity to see the bigger picture and how different disciplines intersect to create innovative solutions. The ability to connect classroom theories to real-world applications is one of the most valuable takeaways from an internship at IMET Alloys.

They don’t just learn how things work; they gain an appreciation for why they work the way they do, equipping them with insights that will enhance their final year of study and beyond.

Opportunities

But it’s not just about technical proficiency.

At IMET Alloys, we believe in promoting collaborative and inclusive work environment where interns feel valued and encouraged to contribute fresh perspectives.

The relationships built with supervisors and colleagues extend beyond the internship, providing our intern with a network of professionals who can support and guide them as they advance in their careers.

As Uwais and Faiz return to university to complete their final year, they do so with a wealth of experience, new skills, and a greater appreciation for the industry they are preparing to enter. Their time at IMET Alloys has equipped them with the tools to confidently approach engineering challenges, and we are proud to have played a role in their development.

If you are a student looking to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and forward-thinking company, we encourage you to consider applying for an internship at IMET Alloys.

It’s a chance to work with highly skilled professionals across multiple fields, contribute to meaningful projects, and make an impact in a growing industry.
